RX888 SDR

February 2026

I’ve re-started my experiments with an RX-888 MK2 SDR – this is an excellent receiver due to it’s 32MHz bandwidth, allowing you to monitor the full HF band.

I’m running Ubuntu 24.04 with ka9q-radiowa2n ka9q-web web interface.

My RX-888 has been modified as per this page https://ka7oei.blogspot.com/2023/08/improving-thermal-management-of-rx-888.html

Previously I was using a WellGood v4.1 loop antenna https://www.george-smart.co.uk/projects/wellgood-loop  built by Mike with a Coax loop attached to a hula hoop https://www.merseyradar.co.uk/m1geo-wellgood-active-rx-loop-antenna but it became evident that the WellGood has a noise jump peaking around 21MHz https://bsky.app/profile/hb9vqq.bsky.social/post/3lhjjf7i6sk2d
I’m now using the N4CY version of a LZ1AQ loop antenna https://active-antenna.eu/amplifier-kit with the same Coax loop.

One of the major challenges has been reducing interference which continues to be an ongoing battle. Here are some of the things I have done so far:

Once connected this is the spectrum display I’m seeing

Full HF Band
0-16 MHz

Unfortunately I suffer from VDSL interference between 8.5 MHz to 12MHz which is band U2 according to this document

The VDSL interference is not originating from my property as I have fibre internet and I’ve been unable to eliminate or reduce the interference.

VDSL 8.5MHz to 12MHz

Next Steps to reduce interference
